Hello again!
As I have recently began working in a salon for the very first time, I thought it would be a good idea to talk about this experience and give you all some insight into being a self-employed nail technician working in a salon.
This is based on my personal experience and thoughts but I have found that more people will come to you if you are based in a salon as there is an air of legitimacy around you- you are definitely good enough if you are working out in the public. This is my personal opinion and not to say that home-based beauticians aren't legitimate- but I think it just makes it look better.
I found this concept to be confusing, however after researching about it I found you do not need to register as self-employed unless you have made over £1,000 since 6 April 2018 and 5 April 2019 which I certainly did not so this is an issue for another day! However, after speaking to a few fellow self employed friends it seems to be straight-forward enough. The way the beauty industry work you will usually be paying rent for your chair/station and whatever you make on top of that is your profit- I would highly recommend it even though you're not keeping all of the money you make but being based in a salon gets you so many more clients- it looks more legit and people will feel more at ease coming for a treatment in a salon.

PROS
Not going to lie, most of this list will be pros because I have enjoyed working in a salon so much- it has brought me out of my bedroom where I can finally speak to people and it is such a lovely atmosphere.
Atmosphere
As previously mentioned- the social aspect of working in a salon has been my favourite so far. I love speaking to other clients and the other people working in the salon. I am based in a small salon in the East End of Glasgow so we all speak to all clients and to each other and it is a lovely atmosphere in general- very welcoming.
Clients
I had thought the client base I had previously was big enough- I did not realise how much being based in a salon would build my client base up- I get clients coming in to get their brows done to the owner of the salon and seeing my nail desk and subsequently booking an appointment for later on! It makes me so happy to see not only my friends and acquaintances but also complete strangers coming in and supporting me.
Legitimacy

General
Other than than, the only real con I have found was that I was so scared and nervous at first. This was my first time working in a salon, after being based at home since February of this year. But I can genuinely say I am so happy I took the leap and trusted myself and my abilities enough to do this as it has been the best thing for me.
Thank you so much for reading, hope I have put your mind at ease if you are thinking of working in a salon or becoming self-employed. Good luck!
Marta xoxo
